An expressive experimental piece combining a mix of media to create a blend of abstract realism.

The gestural charcoal figure drawing was the result of one of my gesture practice sessions which I then applied a mix of shellac, casein and watercolour to create the spontaneous abstract elements in the piece.. I then cropped the sheet of paper (which had several figure drawings) to create the best composition for the piece and mounted it on hardboard..

As the charcoal pencil drawing of the figure was to play a prominent role in the final piece, it was refined with a wax charcoal pencil and then painted in thin layers of oil paint so as to achieve a translucent effect that melded in with its background. Then once completely dry it was given a few coats of varnish for added protection..

*Note: The first image shows the most accurate representation of the piece's tone and colour.

Jacqueline Gomez is a contemporary Malaysian artist. With Anglo-Indian ancestry, she grew up in an urban, multiracial and cultural environment of Malaysia. This experience surely influenced her viewpoint and motivated her to reflect diversity as fully as she could in her art. Her conceptual works are typically formed and inspired by what she finds in the pages of books, which are her second love, as well as by the unavoidable impacts of the unusual and "interesting" times we are currently experiencing.

Jacqueline Gomez views the constant development of her artistic abilities as essential to the creative process, and she believes the exploration and development of her abilities in various mediums and techniques as one of the many amazing and continuously inspirational aspects of the process. Without the constraints of cultural conventions or traditional beliefs in her local context, her artistic freedom has been essential to her development as an artist.
