Willem Botha, a dedicated and accomplished sculptor, embraces a classical approach to his artistry, showcasing a profound affinity for exploring the human and animal forms. Born on April 1, 1962, in Pretoria, South Africa, Willem's journey into the world of sculpture has been characterized by a deep-seated passion and an unwavering commitment. Botha's sculptural career took root in 1981, as he embarked on exhibiting his work in shows and exhibitions within the South African Defense Force. In 1986, his artistic path led him to Namibia, where he assumed the role of the Sculptor for the Windhoek State Museum. During this period, he engaged in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Windhoek and Swakopmund, showcasing his burgeoning talent.
In 1990, Botha transitioned to Cape Town, dedicating himself fully to his sculpting endeavors. A pivotal move in 1991 took him to Graskop, situated in the northeastern reaches of South Africa, where he pursued sculpting with renewed vigor and founded his own foundry. This period of intense creativity culminated in his return to Pretoria in 1992, where he continued to hone his craft while establishing the Art Cast Foundry – a testament to his deep commitment to both sculpting and the intricate processes that bring his creations to life.
Throughout his artistic journey, Botha's works have graced galleries in Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Namibia, and even Sofia, Bulgaria. His sculptures, which often evoke dramatic tension and an exploration of gravity's perceptual boundaries, have captured the attention of collectors worldwide, finding homes in private collections across the globe. Notably, his talents have been commemorated in public commissions, such as the sculptures at the SANRAL building in Midrand, Johannesburg, and the striking Atlas sculpture adorning the Hohenzollern Building in Swakopmund, Namibia.
